The title of this post was my reaction to my first bike/run brick since last October and the hashtag to my workout tweet. Man, do bricks suck…
To rewind a bit…. After at least five people told me during Wednesday night’s group ride (14.8 miles) that my back wheel was untrue, I dropped it off at Capitol Cyclery on Friday for a quick fix.
Sunday, after a great homemade pancake breakfast, I picked up the bike and headed with Josh to Alligator Bayou. It’s a nice 13.5 mile loop very popular with cyclists. So popular, in fact, that the gravel parking lot at a defunct bar now charges $2 to park there. 😦
Josh and completed the 13.5 miles in 53:33, or about 15.1 mph. Not a bad pace for my first real (e.g. no stop lights or waiting for the group) ride in months. Part of the Alligator Bayou loop is beautiful — a swampy area on the right side of the road (a scary 7-10 drop if you leave the pavement, though) and nice shady trees. The second half of the loop is more residential and has MANY fewer trees (read: HOT!).
We completed one loop and knew we didn’t have time for another. Unfortunately, the current bane of my existence because it keeps me from training was calling — yard work. So I asked Josh if he minded if I did a quick one mile run before we left. He graciously accompanied me on a really crappy, but pretty fast mile. I did it in 9:55 — a great time for me and proof that Couch to 10K speed may actually be working. Of course, I was a panting at the end and felt terrible, but that’s a brick for you. It was a great reminder that I can’t coast into du and tri season just because I’m in better shape this year than last. I still have a lot of work to do.
Speaking of du and tri season, here is my current race schedule for summer:
May 5 – Girls on the Run BR 5K in Baton Rouge
May 19 – Rite Aid 5K in Cleveland (will likely walk this with my fellow racers, Josh and his family, before we spend the day exploring Cleveland. I’d love to run, but couldn’t handle being sweaty all day!)
June 10 – Bridgeman 104 Duathlon in Gretna
July 28 – RocketChix II Triathlon in Baton Rouge
I’d also like to add the mini-sprint tri I did last year — the Miles Perret Tri – in Lafayette in August and maybe one more race, but we’ll see.
